Besides a host of top-notch horses, Great Meadow offers a full day of fun for attendees Saturday at the 62nd running of the Virginia Gold Cup.
The day will kick off at 10 a.m. and the public is advised to arrive early since record crowds are expected to attend.A Civil War cavalry battle re-enactment between North and South will feature in the early festivities, beginning promptly at 10.
Other events scheduled before and after the races will include parachuting, a demonstration of border collie sheep dogs working sheep and ducks, a retirement gallop by former Gold Cup winner Private Gary, the Fauquier High School Marching Band, a foxhound race, a parade of BMW automobiles, launching of a hot air balloon and parachuting, plus a live broadcast of the Kentucky Derby over the P. A. system.
Then, of course, there are the races — 10 in all. Virginia’s premier timber race will headline a sevenrace card. The 4-mile timber classic will be endowed with the richest purse ever, $30,000, in the long history of racing over post and rail fences in this country.
First run in 1922 for a delicate solid gold cup, The Virginia Gold Cup has attracted the finest timber toppers in the nation.
All in all, the day of racing has a record purse structure of $100,000, putting the Virginia Gold Cup in the lead of sanctioned races both in Virginia and nationally.
