Leading the state in job growth was the Northern Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Growth in that area totalled 655,000 jobs, a 6.6 percent increase. It was, in addition, the only area to grow at a rate higher than the state average. The Bureau observed that the Northern Virginia area’s “overall balanced growth across private industry categories” produced almost 40 percent of the total increase in employment in the entire Commonwealth.
The Lynchburg MSA was the only one to show a negative figure, with a drop of .4 percent employment from 1986. Closer to home, Charlottesville posted a 2.5 percent
