The in-fighting — if there was any — came at last Wednesday night’s work session, because at Monday’s board meeting, the supervisors presented a united front as they trimmed $213,235 from the proposed 1987-88 school budget. The reduction leaves projected school spending with a modest five percent increase over the current year or about seven cents more on the real estate levy.
The supervisors approved the $3,407,792 school budget by categories but reviewed each line item in the process, sending a clear message to the School Board on where exactly they wanted the reductions to come. And what they want cut is pay raises: teachers to get 10 percent rather than 10.9 percent; administrators to get five percent instead of a flat $3,515 increase; secretaries and custodians to get five percent raises instead of 10. They also want a reduction in force (RIF): the elimination of the third central office administrative post of special services coordinator now held by Pam Rowe.
