on osteoporosis
Osteoporosis will be the subject of a free health forum presented by Dr. Robert Rutkowski on May 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Culpeper Memorial Hospital dining room. The most common skeletal disorder in the world, osteoporosis is second only to arthritis as the leading cause of bone problems in the elderly.
“Osteoporosis means ‘porus bone,’ and it results from a gradual loss of bone substance. Some loss of substance occurs naturally with aging in all individuals,” said Dr. Rutkowski, an orthopaedic surgeon in Culpeper. “In some older adults, however, this loss reaches significant proportions, so that tones become porous and weakened, breaking easily.”
