Mr. Fletcher’s next witness was Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Bruce E. Byrd, who in his 16 years in the Navy has attended some 39 schools, including missile technician, ballistics, aerodynamics and physics. He added that he is a Navy-certified small-arms instructor.
He testified that in 15 years, he has missed only two hunting seasons with Mr. Selvage. “In my observations based on hunting with him,” CPO Byrd said, “he is a very competent, thorough and safety-conscious hunter... He is also an expert shot ... I have seen him fire three rounds in IV2 to two seconds. At 40 yards you could cover them with a silver dollar.”
He said that the round used by Mr. Selvage would, at 100 yards, transmit 1,300-1,400 foot/pounds, or 60 percent of its energy to an object, “if you can stand up to it you’re a better man than me,” he added.
CPO Byrd said that, by his experience, a hyper-velocity round such as the one used by Mr. Selvage will, when fired into an object, cause an effect known as hydrostatic shock. He likened it to the effect of shooting into a water-filled milk jug.
If you shoot it with a .22, the round will punch right through the carton, CPO Byrd said. But if you shoot the same carton with a hypervelocity high-powered rifle round, the entrance hole is the size of the round, but the carton will explode due to the effect of the bullet on the liquid inside.
