Asked about the\ conversation when he met Mr. Selvage on the trail, Mr. Price said it was “a general conversation about deer. He didn’t ask me about hunting with anyone eke — as far as I know he didn’t know anyone else was on the mountain.”
He recounted the scene again: “I just heard one sound, off to the left from where the body was found. Mr. Selvage ran up the hill about 30 yards and stopped on the uphill side ^>f the trail. H took the classic stance, left leg forward ... after the shot was fired he went straight up the mountain.”
Asked again about the time, Mr. Price admitted that “it could have been anywhere between 4:50 and 5:10.”
“Could Mr. Selvage have yelled to you, ‘Mr. Price, there’s a man up here!’?” Mr. Fletcher asked.
“No sir,” Mr. Price replied. “He said ‘I’ve shot a man’.”
“He didn’t say anything about a man having a heart attack?” Mr. Fletcher asked.
“No sir,” Mr. Price replied.
Mr. Price said that when he reached the tree behind which the body lay, he found his stepson lying on the ground with the gun across his legs, the barrel pointing up the mountain. Mr. Gray’s left leg was crossed over his right. “I can’t say if he was lying there or he had fell,” he said.
