wound as a “3/4 inch slit, more or less like a cut with a penknife. ”

She found no trauma to any internal organs other than the missile track.

In response to a question from Mr. Fletcher, Dr. Field said that the path of a hyper-velocity missile, such as that fired from a high-powered rifle, would be expected to cause more damage as it passed than what she found. She saw “no mutilation of any organs, . . . found no bullet fragments.”

She also described finding “material consistent with powder debris” on the microscopic sections of the entrance wound. She said that the debris was “easy to detect” on each section. Dr. Field added that with “a shot fired from a .30-.06, from 194 feet away, I would not expect to find powder — it would certainly not be easy to detect — on a bullet fired from that distance.”

Describing herself as a veteran of “about 1000 autopsies,” Dr. Field told the court that “given information about the distance a shot travelled, I have never found powder in a bullet wound at that distance.’r

Usually, she said, powder debris is found on wounds from shots fired from a distance of up to two to three times the length of the gun barrel. (Mr. Selvage’s rifle had a 22-inch barrel.)

“How about a distance of 10 feet?” Mr. Fletcher asked.

“It would be unusual,” Dr. Field replied.

“How about a shot fired from 20 feet?”

“It would be very unusual,” she replied.

“How about a shot fired from 194 feet?” Mr. Fletcher continued.

“I don’t know of any examples,” Dr. Field said.

She further told the court that it is “very difficult” to determine the calibre of a bullet by the size of the entrance hole; that the consistency of a human body is “essentially the same” as that of a deer; that it is difficult to predict the trajectory of a bullet after it strikes a body, and that the track is established by observing the damage to organs.
