Why me?’”

Warden Bankston said that when he first arrived, he didn’t know who had fired the shot, and that he saw no evidence of a wound on Mr. Gray’s body until he opened his jacket and shirt and saw blood. When he pulled up the t-shirt, he saw a small wound.

Warden Bankston further testified that, when he returned to the scene on Saturday, the day after the shooting, Mr. Selvage showed him a different spot on the trail where he said he was standing. There was about a 60-yard difference, he said, between the spot he indicated on Friday evening and the spot he showed Warden Bankston on Saturday, the game warden said.

Warden Bankston said if the bullet passed completely through the animal, there should have been some evidence of the shot at the spot where the deer was hit. The blood trail, he testified, began about 20 yards east of where Mr. Selvage indicated the deer had stood.
