Strasburg scored three runs on three hits and two errors in the top of the fourth, then added another run on two hits in the fifth.
With the game tied at four, Coach Leake pulled starting pitcher Matthew Settle in favor of sophomore reliever Doug Smith. He held Strasburg scoreless, pitching two innings and receiving credit for the win.
In the bottom of the seventh, with the score still even at four, designated hitter Gregg Daczewitz drew a walk, and Jay Burke was substituted as a pinch-runner. Adam Clatterbuck was sent to the plate, pinch-hitting for Thomas Jones. He poked a sacrifice fly, moving Burke to second base. Burke took third base on a passed ball. Greg Smith then came to the plate with one out, a runner on third, and rapped a sharp base hit to right field to bring Burke home with the winning run.
“It was a big game,” Coach Leake said. “Overall, the best game of the season ... the best team effort. We executed each time, moved the runners around. That was the difference in the game.
