“No. He said he was hunting with his son-in-law or something — but they were at the truck and he was headed there ... I saw no one except Sam Shafer until I met Mr. Price.”
Mr. Fletcher asked Mr. Selvage to describe what happened as he went up the hill after the deer.
He replied that he reached the spot where he thought the deer fell and found nothing. “I saw something further up the hill, something reddish brown. I ran up the hill — saw a boot — then ...” His face registering the shock as he recalled the scene, Mr. Selvage said, “Bam! Oh, my God! I first thought the man was asleep. I hollered, ‘Hey!’ I nudged the boot with my foot. Oh, my God, I hollered ‘Somebody’s hurt, come up quick!’.”
Mr. Selvage said Mr. Price came up the hill and he asked if he knew the man. Mr. Price replied, “My God, it’s my son-in-law.” He added that they saw no blood, but when he felt for a pulse he found none. “His wrist was kind of cool — there was no heat from the body.”
He said that he didn’t realize that the man had been shot until they opened his coat and saw blood. “Before that I thought he had had a heart attack.”
