Following the recognition of the organizations and their volunteers, Maurice Herndon rose to point out to the organizers that one group had been overlooked — inadvertently, he was sure. The audience seemed both bemused and amused by his comment, and he explained his point. “The Northern Piedmont Beekeepers Association is an organization which is especially appreciated at this time of year: swarming season.”
Beekeepers across the country, he added, contribute some $9 billion to the economy as well — the product of their charges’ labors. And, he stressed, members of the association, himself included, are always willing to rid local residents of unwanted swarms of bees.
