Although hampered by a season full of rain-outs and games called due to darkness, the RCHS baseball team has persevered, compiling a respectable record of six wins and five losses while keeping well in contention for the Bull Run District playoffs with the season better than half over.
With a win against Strasburg at home on Friday, the Panthers moved into sole ownership of third place in the Bull Run District.
On Thursday, April 23, the Panthers went to Brentsville, facing off for a 3-2 pitcher’s duel which saw RCHS emerge victorious. A total of 10 hits were registered, with winning pitcher Doug Smith holding the home team to four hits and one earned run, while striking out eight Tiger batters.
Leading hitters for the Panthers were James Walters, who went two for four, and Wayne Foster, who was credited with two RBIs.
Coach Gary Leake said that Doug Smith was definitely in control most of the game. “He had both of his breaking pitches working, and maintained good control.”
