Despite a finding by the Washington Town Council that converting the Washington Cash Store into office space would constitute a less intense use, C. E. (Skippy) Giles Jr. will apparently have to come before the council again to seek another answer to his request.
Mr. Giles wants to close the Cash Store and convert the downstairs into office space for the county’s Health Department, which is seeking larger quarters than its present home in the Clopton House. At the Town Council’s meeting on March 9, the council, after lengthy debate, passed a resolution that the conversion would “constitute a more restrictive use than its use as a general store."
In reaching that finding, the resolution states that the council took into account not only the building’s present use as a general store, but also its previous use as a bank. In addition, the resolution notes, “the past uses of the building have traditionally included the presence of an office or offices in its operation.”
