She also sees the colors becoming lighter-peach, teal blue, pinks. “We’ve found that the colors we thought were authentic colonial colors, such as Brafferton blue, Powell-Waller red and deep gold were not the original ones at all and had simply become weathered and dark over 200 years.”
“The country look started out as American primitive,” she says, “because 200 years ago only the monied Colonials could afford such things as English and French fancier flowered and print fabrics. Everyone else used homespun.”
Nowadays, people are more free-spirited in decorating, LemMon concludes, and the country look affords them the opportunity to create “a very personal and comfortable look that won’t go out of style. ”
