RICHMOND — Colonel R.L. Suthard, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police, announced last week a variety of initiatives designed to combat drug abuse and trafficking in the Commonwealth through education, informationsharing and enforcement. Colonel Suthard explained the initiatives at a press conference March 15 at the State Police Academy.
• In one of the first statewide efforts directed at educating schoolage children, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DAjJE) will reach 175,(XX) fifth and sixth grade students this year. State Police train officers from law enforcement agencies across the state, and these officers return to their localities to teach concepts of self-esteem, resistance to peer pressure and positive reinforcement methods to help children say “no” to drugs.
• Virginia is the first state to introduce the Centralized Drug Pointer Index System. The computerized information-sharing system helps agencies receive and disseminate data relating to drug investigations.
