mumps occur regularly. Also, there is a new vaccine against the germ that often causes bacterial meningitis in small children. This illness affects thousands of children each year in the United States, many of whom die or are left with permanent brain damage.

The reason that we have so few problems with these illnesses these days is not that they have been eradicated, but that many parents have been conscientious in having their children vaccinated. It is when there are large numbers of children who are not vaccinated or not vaccinated on the proper schedule that we have outbreaks. It’s a shame when a child suffers unnecessarily when a simple vaccine could have prevented the disease.
