Walking into the keeping room of a country home is like peering into the pages of an 18 th century diary. It speaks to us. It speaks of fine craftsmanship, worn wood on the arms of your rocking chair and spindles poking you in the back. It transports you to a time of spare Shaker furniture set against stenciled, whitewashed walls and fishtail swag curtains framing windows whose shutters are held back with working hinges.
You can almost smell the bread baking and the spicy mulled cider bubbling on the wood stove. Your feet touch random-plank wood floors softened by a braided rug. You relax and let your surroundings soften up the hard edges of the high-tech workaday world. You nest a little. Cocooning is in and more and more the surroundings for it are country.
