was the exotic orchid. The suppliers in this presentation included nurserymen from New Jersey to Germany to Singapore. Plans were commenced in April 1987 to meld these various participants into the central theme display. The result was a spectacular presentation covering one-third of an acre with orchids shown in all their natural settings. Visitors w alked across two red lacquer bridges and viewed the flowers clinging to driftwood and gnarled cork trees against a backdrop of ferns, palms and scheffleras.
The tropical trees and shrubs were selected a year ago from the Florida nursery and as March 1988 approached, they were transported by forklift from their net houses into buildings where they were subjected to low light and conditioned to proper temperatures to prepare them for the air conditioning of the Philadelphia Civic Center. They were given just enough water to keep them alive but prevent them from breaking from their dormancy.
The larger trees were 25 to 35 feet high in three and four foot containers and were individually wrapped for transport by truck to Philadelphia. On arrival they were immediately placed in their selected spots. When the show is over, all these plants and trees will again be carefully wrapped and delivered to pre-arranged northern purchasers.
Everyone should experience the Philadelphia Flower Show at least once — although they say it just gets better every year.
