“Country is the feeling of the ’80’s,” says Lucy Russell of Eastbrook Interiors in Berryville. “It’s feeling comfortable—staying put.” An intimate look, she thinks. You can bring in personal belongings that have been in the family for years.
“In this part of the country a look has to grow on people. The country look did,” Russell says. The look has been comercially big since 1980 and its popularity continues with some evolutions.
She attributes this popularity partly to the fact that anybody can use the look. It blends particularly well with the current Victorian style in homes.
Russell sees the look becoming more interesting with the influence J of English and French country. A few years ago, all the wallpaper looked the same, she says. Cream | backgrounds with small, dark prints. Now there’s more variety ^ In fact, she sees decorating in general becoming more sophisticated. .
One of the nice things about country is that it’s a look everybody1 can deal with, Russell says. It looks different in every house. Adding ribbons, roses and other florals can bring in the French influence. Or you might want to incorporate the English chintzy look with Laura Ashley prints and fabrics. ^
