Cheri’s advice on beginning your own herb garden is to start small. Limit your garden to, say, five or six plants and learn all about them. You could study for years, she says. She recommends buying plants instead of seeds, so that if you start your garden in the spring, by about July you can start clipping and using the herbs.
The Woodards also know a lot of folklore about the medicinal uses of herbs. “Of course we can’t and don’t prescribe anything,” Cheri says, “but we can look something up for you and then sell you the herbs.”
At the beginning, the Woodards say, they took some teasing from friends about growing and selling herbs. But with their business one of the top five in the county, and with catalogs now going out to 3/4 million people across the country, they aren’t likely to be teased much any more. ^
