“Those artists are prostitutes, they sell themselves for money and fame. But for their sanity and their creative spirit they do their own compositions for themselves. They hide them, hoping for the day that the Communist system collapses. Then they may publish them.”
Sometimes they are secretly spirited out of the country to be published in the West — sometimes without attribution because identification could lead to blacklisting for the offending artist.
To the Russian people, “the concept of freedom is much the same as we know in the United States,” Mr. Lezhnev said. But they have not had an opportunity to choose their government or way of life for 70 years, since the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. The system was imposed on the Russian people, he reminds Americans.
He knows both sides. He has become a United States citizen, “with an American family.” After stints with the St. Louis Symphony and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras, Mr. Lezhnev is now a member of the faculty of the Levine School of Music in Washington, D. C. His visit to Rappahannock was made possible by the Virginia Commission for the Arts through its “Arts on the Road” program, through a grant requested by RAAC.
Mr. Lezhnev’s parting advice to Americans in dealing with the Soviet Union? “Never trust them. They lie always. It is such a way of life that they don’t even realize it. Sometimes Americans are too naive in their desire for peace. Just remember that Communism’s ultimate goal — world domination — has not changed. Look at their actions, rather than listen to their words." And “be strong — stronger than them. That is all they respect: Strength.”
