Members of the Rappahannock County Garden Club journeyed north on Wednesday, March 9, to visit the Philadelphia Flower Show, held annually by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society in “The Friendly City.” Sharing the bus for the four and a half hour trip were friends from the Madison County Garden Club.
To visit this “grandaddy of all flower shows” is a real treat. One experiences an early spring in the midst of blustering March weather upon entering the immense auditorium. The logistics of putting together this show is in itself a miracle of management and organization. The displays of miniature arrangements, innovative table settings and the section devoted to pressed flower arrangements under glass were fantastic. And the massive display of a reconstructed red barn in its natural woodland flower setting must be mentioned.
A Chester Springs nurseryman reproduced a contemporary redwood vacation home with cathedral windows, perched on the side of a hill. Its winding stairs connected to a pond and a series of redwood decks below. Another display entitled “Eighteenth Century European Garden” came complete with pergola and boasted three and four foot high foxglove and delphiniums in every hue, so fresh one could almost see the dripping dew\
