Zelma Cooper, owner of The Maple Leaf in Front Royal, believes that the country look was first made popular by do-it-yourself young people about 10 years ago.
“They couldn’t afford , walnut, mahogany and cherry, ” she says, “so they bought oak, which was and is big in the country look. ” And she said that country crafts evolved when young people fixed up old things and sold them in flea markets. Now, she says, they have become craft markets.
Cooper says that one of the nice things about the country look is that it can be individualized. You can have a dressy country look or a primitive country look. She believes the style is growing and says some of the biggest looks right now are quilts for wall hangings and the newer colors—dusty, soft pinks and blues and forest green. ^
