Culpeper Memorial Hospital’s comprehensive physical therapy department focuses on acute care for inpatients and long-term therapy for outpatients. Registered physical therapist Liza Demers and experienced physical therapy aides use state-of-the-art equipment to rehabilitate physically challenged patients toward a more functional lifestyle.
“Most patients seen in this department have orthopedic and neurological impairments, such as fractures, arthritis, strokes, multiple sclerosis, or nerve impingements,” says Mrs. Demers. "Patients are referred for rehabilitation after suffering an injury, accident, or disease. We also see general medical patients, such as diabetics, cardiac patients, and those who are generally weak after surgery. Following patient evaluation, we design specific exercise and gait programs to rehabilitate our patients.”
Safe, non-invasive, chemical-free pain control is offered by the department through the use of neuroprobe and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).
“We recently installed a post-op TENS program designed to relieve pain for OB patients following Cesareans and other abdominal surgery,” says Mrs. Demers.
