Rep. Slaughter has become a key proponent in the Congress of health care reform, introducing original legislation to strengthen the financial soundness of Medicare and to require private Medicare supplement insurance policies, which are now purchased by 70 percent of the elderly, to cover unlimited hospital and doctor bills. He was the most junior member tapped by the Republican leadership last summer to work on a task force to develop substitute legislation to the catastrophic illness protection bill (HR 2470) which passed the House in July 1987.
“Finally, I shall continue to provide efficient constituent service to the citizens of the Seventh District to the best of my ability,” said Mr. Slaughter. ‘These efforts shall include maintaining my four Congressional offices in the district, the monthly visits by my staff into each and every locality to provide local access to the services my office can provide, and the semi-annual town meetings I hold in every city and county in the district.
“Throughout the course of the campaign I will be discussing present and future issues with the citizens of the Seventh District,” Mr. Slaughter concluded, “and I look forward to continuing to represent the Seventh District in the U.S. House of Representatives.”
