The tutors personify the diversity of the county’s residents. There are recently-graduated young adults, married and unmarried, including mothers who have small children of their own. There are retired people who volunteer at the schools in the afternoon. And there are others who work full-time, but who squeeze in a few hours when they can to help the county’s young students.
According to Mrs. Heddleston, it’s not necessary to have any teaching or tutoring experience to volunteer. A former teacher herself, Mrs. Heddleston supervises the volunteer tutors and provides guidance. New tutors get training in using the program’s materials and in supervisory techniques. And if they have questions or problems, Mrs. Heddleston is available to tutor the tutors.
