Dr. Werner Krebser tried and failed last week to muster much support from his fellow planning commissioners for restrictions on the county’s bed-and-breakfast inns. The Wakefield District representative had called last month for regulations to prohibit food service other than breakfast at these country inns and further proposed that the county consider imposing a lodging tax on the B & Bs.
“You have a bedroom there, and you get breakfast, and that’s it (under the terms of the applicable zoning permits),” Dr. Krebser maintained at Wednesday’s monthly meeting of the Planning Commission. By offering evening meals, bed-and-breakfast inns become restaurants; then their presence constitutes spot zoning and encourages a proliferation of commercial uses throughout Rappahannock’s agricultural and conservation areas, he argued.
