Mrs. Thomasson suggested that an advisory group be assembled to assist residents in planning projects which would fall under the guidelines of the ARB.
“If people want to consult,” Mr. Wickens said, “that’s fine. But my feeling is that they should consult with the ARB as a body and not ex parte bend the ear of one member or another.”
“As a person who has served as an advisor,” Ms. Vandort added, “I can tell you that an advisory board would be a disaster.”
Though the four commissioners present seemed to agree that the ARB does not need to be expanded, they also agreed — with Mr. Wickens dissenting — that a public hearing on the board and the Historic District Ordinance might be helpful.
“The way to strengthen the board is to clean up its procedures,” Mr. Wickens said. By expanding it, he insisted, “we could have a mess on our hands. We need to establish procedures and guidelines.”
