placing them with students. For example, Mrs. Heddleston said, one retiree who tutors “regularly throws a little history into his remedial reading class.”
Although members of the community — including Mrs. Heddleston’s mother, herself a former teacher —have tried to offer the schools their services as volunteer tutors in the past, there has never been a program to assist them. Mrs. Heddleston explained that the $16,000 state grant which funds the tutor program provides the necessary administrative and supervisory' structure which allows the volunteers to work more effectively with the students.
The students are offered a variety of options to participate in in the program. At the elementary school, most students receive tutoring during “seat-work time,” so they don’t miss any of their regular classroom studies.
At the high school, students can choose between tutorials arranged during study hall penods or participate in informal, after-school classes, where up to 14 students meet with four tutors to receive instruction in reading and math.
