To the editor:
The Rappahannock Literacy Volunteers is a community-based educational organization dedicated to helping adults learn to read.
Since the illiteracy rate in the state of Virginia is 6.4 percent, but the rate in Rappahannock County is double that — 12.7 percent — our volunteer group is working to reduce this high rate. Besides tutoring illiterate adults, last October we expanded our program to assist adults in obtaining a high school General Equivalency Diploma.
At present we are working with six literacy students, two foreign-family students and 19 GED students. Some of our students are incarcerated in the county jail.
