for the year. The Senate Privileges and Elections Committee voted 11-4 to kill Sen. Charles J. Colgan’s (D29th) bill to allow the election option by referendum.
However, those who follow the legislative process know that nothing is for sure until adjournment at the end of the veto session. Although I am fully aware of valid arguments on both sides of the issue, 1 want my constituents to know that I was one of the four voting in favor of the local option measure. I have been in favor of the local option to elect school boards, without taxing powers, for many years.
It was a great personal honor to me last week to be elected by my fellow Republican members of the state senate as their Minority Whip to replace Sen. Wiley F. Mitchell Jr. (R-30th) upon his retirement.
