Gasoline taxes would increase by five cents a gallon or five percent a gallon under bills proposed by Sen. Clive L. DuVal II (D-32nd), and Sen. Robert L. Calhoun (R-30th).

Fairfax County would raise about $17 million with a five-cent tax increase, said DuVal. The people of Fairfax County would prefer the five percent tax, DuVal said later, because they expect gasoline prices to rise.

The bills would be limited to Northern Virginia localities. Funds received from the tax would be dedicated to transportation needs.
