The difference may be in the mind and imagination of the reader or listener. But usually that is not so, because a poem is a carefully considered group of words, chosen and arranged to make each one more important than it would otherwise be.

One of my chief delights is to read translations of Chinese poems written more than a thousand years ago. Here are two translations of a poem by Wang Wei, called On Passing the Monastery of Accumulated Fragrance.

Ignorant of the way to the Monastery of Accumulated Fragrance

/ wandered many miles through cloud-caught peaks

And ancient forests, spying no trace of human footsteps.
