Gary Leake is happy his varsity basketball squad is 8-1, but he’s far from satisfied. “We’ve been plagued by inconsistency this year,” said Leake, assessing the team’s performance at the season’s mid-point.
The Panthers did not play like the number one team in the Bull Run District this past week. Yet they still remain on top with Central after edging Clarke County 61-58 on Friday and the Miller School Red Devils 67-53 on Tuesday.
The Clarke game had 10 lead changes before the visiting Panthers were able to grab the victory.
The Eagles outhustled Rappahannock from the start and lead 13-5 after four minutes. They retained the upper hand and were up 19-13 at the end of the first period.
Down 21-13 after two minutes in the second quarter, the Panthers were sparked by a Doug Smith jumper and outscored Clarke 10-1 during the next two minutes.
