Wang Wei was a civil servant, a painter as well as a poet, who lived from 701-761 A.D., at a critical time in Chinese history.
Not surprisingly, none of his paintings have survived. Wang Wei is one of a number of remarkable poets of his time, some of whom were friends and acquaintances.
In writing his poem, like so many poets before and after him, Wang Wei has achieved fame far beyond any that he might have won as an important official at the Emperor’s court.
I mention all this because, historically, poetry is as enduring as any other art form, and often more so. But it is difficult to produce. A great poem takes tHh! skill, imagination, patience and training that a great sculpture requires.
Verse and poetry aren’t the same. They may be superficially similar, but a good poem is unique and can be as simple as a pie, or it can be complicated and many-layered like a petit-four. It is a form of art that, fortunately, we can all own.
