pictures of them, their homes, their families and friends and other aspects of their lives and work.
Other poets will read and discuss poems by the contemporary poets featured in the series, and participants will talk about the poems with Peter Klappert, a poet and professor at George Mason University who will lead the discussion series.
The five poets included in the se^sies, Langston Hughes, William Carlos Williams, T.S. Eliot, Elizabeth Bishop and Sylvia Plath, led very different lives but yet are united by their works of poetry. Books and other materials about these and other poets have been donated to the library by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association, which are sponsoring the series. ,'i A total of 13 films were made for -,the “Voices and Visions” series, which was originally broadcast on PBS. All of the films have been do♦ nated to the library, one of 25 in the country which received an NEH 'grant. i V . For example, when Walt Whitman begins his famous poem about the death of Abraham Lincoln and its meaning | for him, with the beautiful line, ! When liiacs last in the door yard ! bloomed . . . ■ you know that, for some reason, when Whitman heard the terrible news of the President’s assassinai tion, for some reason he mingled his ! feelings of grief with the beauty and : allure of fragrant white, lavender or i purple lilacs. Whitman goes on to : say that each spring, with the ! blooming of the lilacs, he will re; member Lincoln and his love for the ; President.
