The Foothills Travel Association of Virginia swings into its third year with a membership drive and a Feb. 1 deadline for membership listing in the 1989 Foothills brochure.
The Association, drawing members from tourist- and non-touristoriented businesses, groups and organizations, is a non-profit group supporting the Planning District 9 area: Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties.

RICHMOND — The Virginia . State Police reported today that prelipinary statistics indicate nine pers®ps lost their lives on Virginia’s lighways during the New Year’s iSbliday period from 6 p.m. Friday, Cfec. 30 through midnight, Monday, Jan. 2, compared to 12 for a similar period last year.
Two pedestrians were among the fatalities; of the seven motorists killed, only one was wearing a safety Restraint. Three of the crashes involved alcohol.
Tentative State Police accident statistics also indicate that there were 1,063 highway fatalities in 1988, an increase of 41 from 1987’s tjotal of 1,022.
