Now duriiig trials, “we have a frequent and unhealthy mixing of jurors, witnesses for the accused and witnesses for the prosecution. There’s no separation we can provide in this building (the courthouse),” the county administrator said.
In addition, he noted that the county is fortunate to have a Commonwealth’s Attorney who already has an office in the town of Washington convenient to the courthouse. “He doesn’t need an office in here. If he did, we’d be in deep trouble right now. There’s no vacant room downstairs,” Mr. McCarthy said, adding that the empty room where the drink machine now sits will be used for the elevator which is to provide access for handicapped people.
“It’s plain we have real space needs. They are best met as close to the courthouse as we can get .... Maybe we can use the library (which will be vacated upon completion of a newr county library just beyond the town limits). Maybe some place closer,” the county administrator said, adding that he will submit a draft of the comprehensive plan’s future needs chapter at next month's commission meeting.
