The Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad will sponsor its annual Miss Rappahannock Beauty Pageant on Saturday, May 13 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Rappahannock County High School. The event is open to all young women between the ages of two and 21. There will also be a mother/daughter division this year. All contestants must secure a $10 sponsorship fee, and should plan to attend the rehearsal on Thursday, May 11 at 6:30 p.m. at RCHS. Call for entries
Interested artists are invited to submit photographs, paintings, drawings and sculptures of people in Rappahannock County for a juried show entitled: “Faces of Rappahannock,” to be presented at the Middle St. Gallery, June 2-25. This show will be juried by Washington portrait photographer Susan Harrison, one of the Virginia Museum of the Arts Affiliate Artists. The show will be curated by Dr. Denise Horton, and questions may be addressed to her at 675-3771 or to the Gallery, 675-3440. Work is to be submitted on June 1, and there will be a show fee of $5.
Bluesman Hammond at Gay St.
Renowned blues musician John Hammond will appear in concert at the Gay St. Theater on May 6. The performance is being sponsored by RAAC with the assistance of an anonymous patron who is helping to defray a major portion of the concert’s cost. Advance tickets are on sale at RAAC’s regular local ticket oulets or from the RAAC office at the theater. For information about the concert or ticket locations, call RAAC’s Arts Hotline (675-3073).
Walk-a-thon on Saturday
Wayland Blue Ridge Youth Department will sponsor a walk-athon on Saturday, April 29. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the walk-athon begins at 9 a.m. on Rt. 612 and Rt. 600, off Rt. 211 in Sperryville. Sponsors and walkers are needed. A picnic will follow the walk-a-thon at Horseshoe Inn Recreational Center. The funds raised will benefit the Wayland Blue Ridge Youth Department. Bird study course
Three one-hour classes will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Church on Thursdays from 9-10 a.m. on May 4, 18 and June 1. On alternate Thursdays, May 11, 25 and June 8, there will be three threehour field trips from 7-10 a.m. to different nearby habitats. The course is open to men and women and is designed to help with the field identification of birds with emphasis on springtime bird behavior. Both beginners and more advanced students are welcome. The group maximum will be 15 and there are still some places open. The fee of $20 covers the course and field trips. Call Betsy Thomas to register 9375063.
Historic Society to meet
Rappahannock Historical Society will meet Sunday, May 7 at 3 p.m. in the Historical Society Building, Washington. Judge Raynor V. Snead will review a recent work of historian Alf J. Mapp Jr. Thomas Jqferson, A Strange Case of Mistaken Identity. Mr. Mapp is a 11th generation Virginian. He grew up steeped in the lore of the Old Dominion and is a popular Eminent Professor at Old Dominion University. The new officers will present plans for the summer schedule of the society. “Visitors are welcome to enjoy this program with us,” said a Historical Society spokesperson.

Rappahannock County Elementary School PTA will be presenting a video “Rise to the Challenge” from the Parents’ Music Resource Center. John Borgens, LCSW and director of Family Focus Counsek ing Services will speak on the effect of “heavy metal” music and videos on children and teens. The meeting is open to the public and will be held at RCES on Tuesday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m.
