The fig was one of the most important fruits for people of early civilizations around the Mediterranean Sea. It seems to have been introduced into Greece at least eight centuries B.C.
The fig is mentioned often in the Bible and was eulogized by many early Greek writers. At one period, the fruit was so highly prized in Greece that its export w as forbidden by law.
