the first time is at “Balcarres,” the Victorian house owned bv Mr. and Mrs. Daniel O’Connell at 386 Culpeper St. Built in 1879 for the Lomax sisters, it was the site of their school for young ladies.
A circular drive leads to the front steps and double front doors.
At the backof the house is a terraced
garden. It is surrounded by American oxwood and planted witfi beds of tulips around a giant mulberry tree. There are two “false cypress” on either side of the porch and a signed sculpture of a fox Head over the water fountain on the stone wall.
Blythwood, owned by Mr.and Mrs. William Prime was built in 1953 by a former owner of Eastwood. It is nestled into its hillside setting to take advantage of the panoramic view of the Springs Valley below and the distant Blue Ridge Mountains.
The drive slopes toward the flagstone courtyard entrance. In the comer is a Sterret Kelsey sculpture of a ballerins, modeled after the owner’s daughter. A wall of windows in the living room overlooks the veranda, swimming pool and pool house. This area is landscaped with low growing trees to afford a sweeping view of me countryside. There is also a greenhouse, tennis court, waterfall pool and riding ring on the grounds.
