He explained that the library has outgrown the present building, and several proposals to expand it have proven unfeasible. A small piece of property down the block on Gay St. donated by Mrs. Bird Jones some years ago is too small, too far away, and would not resolve the parking problems already evident on the narrow residential street, I)r. Young explained.
He added that the library is working against a July (5 deadline for application for a state grant to partially fund the expected cost of the new building. The Library Board is hoping for as much as half of the total of $500,000 available in grants, but must have local matching money in a building fund by that date.
