RICHMOND - Gov. Gerald L. Baliles has proclaimed May 1 as the 32nd annual Law Day in Virginia.
The governor signed the proclamation at a ceremony attended by Virginia State Bar President J. Jay Corson IV of McLean, Virginia Bar Association President Thomas T. Lawson of Roanoke, Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference President Walter D. Kelley Jr. of Norfolk and Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Section Chairman David G. Shuford of Richmond.
Law Day was established in 1957 as a national holiday and a time to reflect on the United States’ legal heritage, the role of law in American society and the rights Americans enjoy under the U. S. Constitution, a bar association spokesman explained.
Law Day is part of Community Law Week, observed on May 1-6 this year. Activities during the week include free programs on legal topics and opportunities for citizens to obtain free legal consultations.

Northern Virginia residents may talk with lawyers free of charge during a special three-hour call-in program Wednesday, May 3.
“No Bills Night,” which is sponsored by the Young Lawyers Conference of the Virginia State Bar, will offer individuals free, confidential 10-minute telephone consultations with lawyers. According to a spokesman, persons may receive help on any legal-oriented matter during this public service event by calling (703) 356-2200 between 6 and 9 p.m. Lawyers from throughout |fce area will be participating in tne Northern Virginia “No Bills Night.”
In celebration of Community Law Week, which is May 1-6, the Young Lawyers Conference also is sponsoring “No Bills Night” on May 3 in Abingdon, Roanoke, Fredericksburg and Norfolk and on May 1 in Richmond.
