The Rappahannock girls’ softball team isn’t catching too many opponents off guard anymore, but they’re still confounding the critics who picked them to finish at the bottom in the district standings after last year’s one-win season. Over the week the Lady Panthers cruised past two Bull Run foes before stumbling at home on April 24 to the Central F alcons 6-3.
The Central game was for third place in the district so RCHS drops to fourth with a 5-4 record, 4-4 in the district.
The golden girls easily corralled the George Mason Mustangs on the 20th at home, 19-7. RCHS coach Renee Leake was surprised by the onesided victory. “I think George Mason’s pitcher is the fastest in the district and we hit well off her,” the coach explained.
Rappahannock posted 22 hits for the afternoon and hit over .500 (2241) behind the bats of Sherron Boddie and Dawn Johnson. Boddie was four-of-five at the plate and the senior Johnson was five-of-six accounting for over half of RCHS’ runs.
