The boys’ iron man has been Beiyi Roy. “He may not always win but he participates in a lot of events and he places, picking up points,” said Mrs. Scott.
Another strong point for the Panthers is the hurdles where freshman Celeste Waggener has been turning heads. “She’s got such long legs and seems to glide over the jumps,” said the coach. Celeste is supported by teammate Sarah Bartlett, who is recovering quickly from an offseason leg iryury.
The Panthers say they wish they could compete at home but they know there’s no money in the budget this year for fixing the,,tj:ackw According to Chairman Beverly Massie, the School Board has not been asked to allocate money for track maintenance. In fact, the School Board was unaware that the facility had deteriorated, Mrs. Massie said in a telephone interview this week.
As a general rule, revenue for projects such as this has come from the RCHS athletic fund, a school account comprised primarily of admission charges and fees.
“Most of the time the school will handle problems such as this internally and raise the money themselves,” said Mike Lacika, the RCHS athletic director.
School officials promise home meets in 1990 but until then the homeless Panthers must continue their journey to state competition on the road.
