Another essential task coordinated by Mrs. McNear is finding senior volunteers who can check on other elderly residents who live alone. It is a potentially lifesaving task, she said, noting one example of an elderly, nearly blind man whose electricity went off last winter. He has no telephone, she explained, and “If Sid Gottlieb hadn’t been checking on him, making sure he had wood on the porch and other necessities, I don’t know what might have happened.”
Another new program recently undertaken in the county is finding volunteers to provide respite for families caring for Alzheimer’s victims. Sometimes, the' service involves just sitting with the person so the other family members can get out for a change of pace. “We have two volunteers working with this program,” she said, ’’but we need more.”
Even though she is pleased with the number of volunteers already affiliated with the CSC and its programs, Mrs. McNear said she is always looking for additional help. Anyone, senior or younger, who is willing to volunteer, their time to help with any of the Community Service Center programs should contact Mrs. McNear at her office at Family Guidance Services of Rappahannock (675-3329).
