Cate suggests starting plants outdoors in June.
“If you start in May, the plants could die and the kids get discouraged,” she says. “Or vou can sow seeds in the house and they can w atch them come up.”
But keep away from tinv, fine seeds that are difficult for small hands to maneuver, she recommends.
Bagged soil should be used for any seeds started indoors, Cate says. Outside soil is not sterile and its use can lead to disappointment for a budding horticulturalist.
And, Cate says, “transplanting can be a messy business,” so parents be forewarned.
The best plants for flower and vegetable gardens are the two Z’s: zucchini and zinnias. Both are easy to plant, fastgrowing and very reliable. Lettuce, radishes, peas and beans can be started outdoors and are easv to grow also. Other ideal flowers are cosmos, bachelor’s buttons and cornflowers.
She suggests buving plants for petunias, impatients and begonias, since their seeds are so tiny. These plants are also good for patio or balcony gardens.
In all cases, Cate says a child’s garden should be mulched heavily to cut down on watering and weeding.
