Courthouse Square is the headquarters of the Fauquier Historical Society.

The museum served as the countv jail until 1967. The brick section was built about 1808. A stone addition and a 20-foot stone walled exercise vard was added in 1823 and a kitchen in 1824.

Within the stone building, the very primitive cells with the original iron bars can be seen.

On the green in front of the museum is a stone obelisk, a memorial to John S. Mosby, the Grey Ghost of the Confederacy, unveiled in 1920.

Locally, the Warrenton Garden Club has for many years beautified our community with the planting of trees, bulbs and flowers along our nighwavs, and around our commercial centers and public buildings.

The club also co-sponsors a unique day camp for 6- to 11-year-olds in conjunction with the Piedmont Environmental Council. Children from the county are eligible to attend the camp. Activities involve discovery' walks and structured activities centered around natural science to create a sense and growing awareness of the wonders and resources of our environment.

The interest of garden lovers and the generosity and cooperation of many homeowners over the years has brought enjoyment and appreciation of our l<>cal environment to many residents and visitors to the area.
