Needed: Blood donors
The country-wide shortage of blood for use by hospitals continues, according to the American Red Cross.
In an effort to assist the Fauquier Chapter of the Red Cross (which also serves Rappahannock County) in meeting its quota, the county’s Extension Homemakers’ Clubs will sponsor a Bloodmobile visit to the county next Wednesday, May 3. It will be held at the Washington fire hall from 4-8 p.m.
Looking to make donations easier for the many county residents who work elsewhere, the hours have been extended into the evening to encourage them to stop by on the way home from work. Obviously, some thought and planning has gone into this effort, and we hope that the county’s residents will support the Red Cross.
Red Cross officials theorize that the on-going shortage of blood is related to the public’s fear that AIDS or other infectious diseases may be contracted through the donation process. That is not possible, the Red Cross stresses. All needles and other instruments used in the collection of blood donations are used one time, on one individual, and then discarded. There is no danger of contracting a disease through blood donation.
In an effort to boost participation in the blood donation program, the Red Cross has published a piece entitled, “What Good is a Blood Donor?” Given the current critical shortage, it is worth thinking about.
“A blood donor is good for people who go through windshields and red lights . . . For somebody with leukemia . .. For people being operated on ... . For barefoot kids who aren’t careful... For victims of violence .. . For hemophiliacs so they can live as normally as possible . . . For daredevils ... For someone going through dialysis while waiting for a kidney transplant. . . For people who fool around with guns ... For little kids who manage to uncap a bottle of something poisonous . . . For people who are badly burned . . . For new mothers needing transfusions . . . For a new baby w ho needs a complete change of blood supply . . . For someone having open heart surgery .. . For cancer patients ... For someone with a severe case of hepatitis ... For kids w ho fall out of trees or anywhere else .. . For anybody any age with bleeding ulcers . . . For people in the wrong place at the wrrong time ... For the very tired with severe anemia ... For people who run into things . . . For all the people w ho are in a lot worse shape than most people you know.
“A blood donor is good for life.”
We urge any county residents who are able to donate blood (and that includes almost all adults, regardless of age or physical condition) to assist the Red Cross and the Extension Homemakers as they work to alleviate the crisis facing the nation’s blood supply.
Remember, the life you save may be your own — or someone you love.
