HARRISONBURG - The James Madison University Arboretum will observe its official dedication at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 28.
The arboretum, a 33-acre tract of woodland near the JMU Convocation Center, opened to the public last year. The dedication was twice postponed due to heavy rain last May.
Gerald P. McCarthy, executive director of the Virginia Environmental Endowment since 1977, will speak at the ceremony. The organization awarded JMU $17,500 to purchase plants and educational material for the arboretum, which includes an interpretive center and trails.
JMU President Ronald E. Carrier and Dr. Robert Shapiro, dean of the College of Letters and Sciences, will also speak at the dedication. A dedicatory tree will be planted.
The arboretum is one of the few public arboretums in Virginia. Dr.
